Greenland Expedition 2010

Not your average vacation

This is it

Today is the big day. I can’t believe it’s finally here. In mere hours we will board our planes and meet up in Copenhagen where we will sleep over to catch the early flight on Monday morning to Kangerlussuaq on the west coast of Greenland. I’m still not done packing but I can see the end of it from here. It’s getting late and I need some sleep. More updates tomorrow.

Only 5 days left

After two years of planning and preparations it’s now just 5 days left until we leave for Greenland. We’re pretty much in control of all the equipment and planning at this stage. Air traffic is finally back to normal after the volcanic eruption on Iceland and we’re both quite anxious to get going. We have decided to leave the equipment needed to send live pictures to our web page at home. After several tests we feel that the setup is not reliable enough and believe we will have issues keeping the batteries sufficiently charged to send daily updates. Losing 5 kg of equipment does not hurt either.

Note that we will still update the web page on a daily basis by calling in our updates via satellite phone. So if you have not done so already, subscribe to our blog via email, RSS or Twitter to keep up to date on our progress and challenges.

If you would like to send us a greeting during our trip you can leave a comment with the latest post and they will be conveyed to us on the ice cap the next time we check in.

Custom ski repair kit

In case we break a ski during our crossing we need a way to mend it. This involves a hacksaw, a custom hand drill, some bolts, nuts and a custom aluminium rail. We’ll describe the kit in detail after our return from the ice cap. The aluminium rail was skillfully produced by tinsmith Arne Linchausen at Aune Blikk. You can see him in action in the photo below. Thanks guys!

Monsen sends his regards

Being a Norwegian outdoors icon and expeditionist, Lars Monsen is one of our greatest inspirations. He makes his living writing books and creating TV-series from his trips and expeditions in the wilderness. His latest production, “Ingen Grenser” (No Limits), just finished airing in Norway and was a huge success. Yesterday he kindly let us interview him about the mental aspects of expeditions for beginners. Stay tuned for the full interview after we return from the ice cap.
