It’s a common practice to gain weight before embarking on a expedition in polar regions. Devouring more than 5000 kcal to replace the energy we spend each day is a challenge. Storing some reserves around your waist as fat gives you an advantage. In addition the fat helps insulate against the cold. Personally I find it hard to gain weight, especially when working out a lot. To overcome this I add extra fat to most meals. I love fish, and boiled cod is a classic Norwegian dish. To compensate for the low fat content of cod and potatoes I now have the privilege of adding plenty of bacon to the dish. Delish!

A tip here is to not drink until after the meal as to not use up valuable stomach space on liquids. Should be a treat this holiday season
Oh…and try drinking the upcoming akevitt heated between 25 and 30 degrees centigrade warm. It’s simply fantastic!

Hi Kenneth, and thanks for commenting on our blog. Good advice indeed! The rules of engagement this christmas are:
* Eat often
* Eat lots
* Never say no to a snack

This is definitely the best part of preparing for such an expedition. I have been recommended making homemade milkshakes for snacks. Lots of full fat milk and ice cream + sugar. Yumm! But how to stop such habits after the expedition is over…..?

Jesus fellas, I had no idea this was part of the ramp up! That means I just finished 2 solid weeks of expedition preparation by sitting on my ass eating and drinking as much as possible! I feel so ready now.
