To cross the Greenland ice cap one needs to get a permission from the Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation (Prev. DPC). We have dutifully filled out the application form and submitted it today together with route details, maps and packing lists. Next up is applying for a Search And Recue Insurance, Firearm Permit and a Radio Permit. Fingers crossed.

We just sent our application forms too! I just hope we won’t have any problem with the exchange from DPC to Greenland in january. Greenland will take over on the administration of permits in 2010.

The nice lady at DPC told us that the Government of Greenland would start working on the applications in December. That was the earliest we could count on getting our DPC ref. number which we need for the radio and gun permits.
Fingers crossed

Yes indeed, fingers crossed…have you hear about the amount Greenland wants to charge for permits?

Yes. I believe it’s about 4000 DKK or 850 CAD.

well…we should have made our expedition last year…ha ha ha…
By the way, are you travelling with your own pulka or are you gonna rent one in Greenland?

We are bringing our own sleds. They are super light weight. Have a look here: http://greenlandexpedition2010.com/v/technical/sled/paris2

OK, I knew you had a sled, just wanna know if you wanted to bring it or rent it. So do you think you’ll have problem wit registering it as luggage in the plane? Mine is a bit bigger, hope it will be ok to get it to be registered as luggage.

Hey guys,
We’re going to Greenland as well in April and about the Paris sleds, we have done a practice trip in Alberta last summer and had no issues at all with flying the sleds (Air Canada). We stacked them and filled them up with light, bulky material (like mattresses). Worked out perfectly, packed in Air Canada large plastic bags, in over sized luggages and at no additionnal costs.
For the permit, only received the Danish temporary permit number… resubmitting this week… crossing fingers.
All the best!

Hi Catherine,
Thanks for commenting on our blog. I just had a look at yours. It’s awesome! Nice work. Looks like you guys are in control of your preparations and are well underway with training. As for the sleds, we shipped ours by plane last April when we were going to northern Norway for a week of training. We filled one sled each with equipment and placed the other one on top of that as a lid. Then we wrapped the whole thing in cardboard and secured it with duct tape. Worked like a charm! In Norway you have to pay extra for over sized luggage. The upside is that the over sized luggage have an ample weight limit. So by packing all the heavy stuff in the sleds we escaped the extra charge on over weight normal luggage. You gotta love rules and regulations!
I wish you the best of luck on your expedition!
