Like many expeditions before us, we have had great success with the Berghaus Yeti Extreme gaiters. These particular gaiters fits like a sock around the ski boot and closes around your leg with a zipper. In addition to fixing them permanently to our boots we have experimented with insulating them with a thin layer of wool. Check out the images in the photo album.

Just wandering what kind of ski boots and binding you’ll be using in greenland?

For our boots we are using the Alfa Skarvet. They are fairly light NNN-boots in leather (http://www.sportsnett.no/products.shtml?ALF10) . The binding is Rottefella NNN-BC M-3 Magnum Manuell (http://www.sportsnett.no/products.shtml?ROT7). The boots I don’t know if you can get in Canada or the US, but the bindings are carried by REI and Backcountry.com.
The boots and bindings are used by most Norwegian expeditions across Greenland and to some extent in Antarctica. Børge Ousland even used them on his trek from the North Pole to Franz Josef land in Russia a few years back.
For North and South Pole expeditions it might be more common to use the Alfa Mørdre Pro boot (http://www.sportsnett.no/products.shtml?ALF1) with the Rottefella Super Telemark 75 mm binding (http://www.sportsnett.no/products.shtml?ROT1). The binding used to come with a wire too, but the manufacturer seemed to drop it from the market. To get the old version you would have to shop second hand and replace the wires with new ones from the manufacturer.

We were thinking about going with a 75 mm telemark binding (http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441989159&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302726061&bmUID=1254327302581&bmLocale=fr_CA) and for the boots we’ll be using the Expedition Garmont boots (http://www.garmontusa.com/921121201.html), so we can take the liner off during the night and keep them warm.

Hvordan fester du filten til gamasjene? Og har du en mal som du klippet filten etter?

Jeg klipte filten til på øyemål. Deretter gikk jeg til en skomaker og ba ham sy de fast med en søm langs den sømmen som allerede gikk på tvers foran i gamasjen. Han gjorde det på 30 sekunder med en kraftig symaskin. Dette får du til manuelt også. Jeg var bare lat.
Om du ser på dette bildet så ser du sømmen som går på tvers rett bak tærne. Her kan du se den originale sømmen som gummien er festet i stoffet med. “Min” søm følger denne.

Takk for tipset. Sydde dem på for hånd i går. Brukte litt mer en 30sek;-) Var ute noen timer på trugetur i dag og det virket bra! Rart ikke noen har produsert isolerte gamasjer..

Fin fint tips, fryser dessverre for et godt ord for tiden, og hopper over til NNN Skarven, yeti pga. dette.
Mitt spørsmål/ide er å bruke tilklippete 2mm neopren sokker i XXL/XXXL til dette formålet?
Mer slitesterkt, kanskje varmere?
